Your prose is like poetry, Valkyrie. Every word and image crammed with power and meaning. Incandescent!

“I think of the wrong turns, the lying to myself about how to get where I needed to go and all that time with my bones and sinew exposed, that hole in my chest. Protection was never protective. I was just a cloud in the shape of a bear.“ Got me good❤️

I'm good sometimes at getting people good. Lol. I get myself good all the time too, then again I'm an easy cryer.

You also make me laugh good—flip-side of the same coin, maybe.

Yup. Same stupid coin. Lol

So much love for this, your three legged dog, and the girl with the hacksaw, but especially the girl spilling the wax all over the kitchen. I think that girl is my long lost sister. ♥️ I read this essay with a smile on my face and want to write an analysis comparing the imagery in the essay with the imagery in the poem You and I are Disappearing by Yusef Komunyakaa and the song Every Single Night by Fiona Apple. I'm a forever college student. Sorry. 😅

I just read that poem and listened to that song. I'd like your paper on my desk by January 1. 😂

Also that wax thing, it really happened to me. I think I was 10 maybe. I was home alone and the wax caught fire. 😳 Lol it forever burned into my mind AND that door.

I haven't done that exact thing yet, but I've made similar wax on fire messes and lots of bloody glass messes. Candles in the 1990s were not safe. Wax with flammable stuff embedded. Gel candles. How I didn't burn down a dorm, apartment, or row house in have no idea.

Valkyrie, I liked this essay. You should include this in your book. It holds universal truths, especially for women of a certain age. Love you. ❤️

Love you too! Thanks 💙

I never know what I'll read when I open your stories, but your writing always exceeds any expectations. Love this. Beautiful and vulnerable. A journey of life, with an outcome (so far) to feel good about.
